This summer I have been developing a new show, with LAStheatre, based on the children’s book ‘The Story of Mrs Lovewright and Purrless her Cat’ by Lore Segal. The process took place in collaboration with 4 schools, a Home Ed group and local families from the Folkestone area. In September, we took up residency at the Folkestone Quarterhouse for a two week R&D.
The story follows Lovewright, a widow, who realises that there is something missing from her life. She is convinced that a cat is just the thing to fill the void but her preconceived idea of love and what the voiceless creature can offer don’t quite match. And so, they must find a love, (w)right for both.
The show raises important issues for audiences, young and old. For adults it touches on preconceived ideas of parenthood and relationships, whilst for children it raises the important discussion of consent and how love and relationships are crafted and cannot be forced.
